Honoring Hispanic Heritage Month: A Time for Reflection, Resilience, and Community
Happy Hispanic Heritage Month!
Wow, what a year it has been. So much has happened, and at times it feels like we can barely catch our breath. But this season is a reminder to pause, reflect, and celebrate the little things, because they are often the most meaningful things.
Hispanic Heritage Month runs from September 15 to October 15 and honors the histories, cultures, and contributions of Americans with roots in Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America.
In Hispanic culture, celebration has always been about community. We gather big, with food, music, and laughter, to honor our roots and share our traditions with the next generation. For me, Hispanic Heritage Month has always meant family dinners, cultural events, and lively community gatherings.
But this year feels different. Many of our celebrations are virtual, our events are scaled back, and some of us are navigating fear and uncertainty. It can feel like we are back in 2020, trying to figure out how to stay connected without putting each other at risk.
And yet, our resilience has never been stronger. We are still here. We are still proud. We are still united.
This month, I challenge you to turn that pride into action:
- Attend a local event, in person if you can, or virtually if you must.
- Support Hispanic-owned businesses and restaurants.
- Donate to immigrant-serving organizations that are fighting for our communities every day.
- Share your story, post about your heritage, traditions, or favorite memories so others can learn and celebrate with you.
- Check in on your neighbors, connection starts small, but it matters.
Even if our gatherings look different this year, celebrating is powerful. It reminds us that we are not alone, that our voices matter, and that we can keep building toward a future where our culture, our families, and our communities can thrive freely and joyfully.
Let’s make this Hispanic Heritage Month one of action, unity, and hope. Together, we are stronger and together, we will keep showing up for one another.
